to the backwaters area (4h). Category Selection: installation in a family home with 3 bedrooms, 19th century. Category Club, in a colonial villa dating from 1868, composed of 6 spacious rooms with traditional Kerala furniture.
Boat trip on narrow canals fringed with coconut palm. Continuation by the road towards Cochin (1h30), former Portuguese counter then Dutch. The city is renowned for its bay and the spectacle of its large fishing nets deployed (so-called Chinese squares).
Discovery of the old town: St. Francis Church and the synagogue founded in 1568 famous for its blue faience tiles (closed Friday and Saturday). Continue to Mattanchery Palace, or “Dutch Palace”, which houses magnificent murals. Free time in the old town. In the evening, you can attend a performance of Kathakali, a costumed drama, sung and danced, whose themes are drawn from the great Indian epics.
Drive to Periyar National Park (5h). Homestay for Departure Selection, in a family of Syrian Christians in the middle of a cardamom plantation. Hotel Spice Village renowned for its ayurvedic massages for the Club category.
Excursion by jeep to discover the plantations of spices (pepper, nutmeg, cardamom …) which are spread on the hills in a superb natural frame. Walk in the forest accompanied by an English-speaking naturalist guide. Possibility of elephant riding (to be booked and paid locally).
Road to Madurai (4h30). Visit the Indo-Muslim Tirumalai Nayak palace, built in 1636. Walk in the old shopping city. Late afternoon at the temple of Minakshi-Sundareshvara. This sanctuary is one of the most alive in South India.
Drive to Dindigul (1h30) and visit the massive granite fort. Stroll through the old town, then set up at Cardamom House, a charming six-bedroom house owned by an Englishman by a lake and near a village. Here you have the opportunity to immerse yourself in rural life and enjoy a beautiful natural setting.
Day dedicated to the discovery of the countryside, much of which is on foot: walk along the Kamarajar lake where you can see many birds, banana plantations and coconut trees, the traditional village of Athoor, the temple of Sadayani and that of the Seven Sisters.
On the road to Pallakad (6h), stop at Palani. Visit the temple of Mlaikovil dedicated to the god of Tamil country, Murugan. To access the sanctuary, you have to climb the 697 steps or take the trolley. A magnificent view of the rice fields and coconut forests awaits you at the top. At noon if one of the six puja of the day unfolds. Installation in Pallakad in a house built in 1794 in the purest Kerala style.
Several activities are offered: walking, cycling or ox cart, yoga classes, excursions to villages, visits to Jain or Hindu temples.
